Library & University Collections at the University of Edinburgh are taking on the mammoth challenge of virtually stepping along the longest distance you can travel on foot from Cape Town to Magadan for their Spring Steps Up challenge. The route travels through 16 countries from Cape Town (South Africa 🇿🇦) and up Africa through Botswana 🇧🇼, Zambia 🇿🇲, Tanzania 🇹🇿, Burundi 🇧🇮, Rwanda 🇷🇼, Uganda 🇺🇬, South Sudan 🇸🇸, Sudan 🇸🇩, Egypt 🇪🇬, through to Israel 🇮🇱, Jordan 🇯🇴, Syria 🇸🇾, Turkey 🇹🇷, Georgia 🇬🇪, ending up in Magadan (Russia 🇷🇺) totalling 13,910 miles.
We're passionate about books and supporting the community so are thrilled to be raising money for the incredible Streetreads Library. It is a unique safe and welcoming place for people experiencing homelessness to to read, relax and access a wide variety of support.
Streetreads Library at Nicholson Square was accessed over 4,000 times through 2024 (up to 200 visits/supports per week) and they are now looking to find a new home for the library and develop their programme of support to help more people in this wonderful peaceful space.
Stories offer a great way to escape the realities of trauma and tough times, a chance to lose yourself in another world, to find solace, adventure and new horizons. They also help us start conversations and build connections vital to recovery from homelessness.
