Story
I am fundraising for the Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA), which works tirelessly to unite against bullying and create environments where people feel safe to be themselves without fear of bullying, be it online or face to face.
In my childhood, I was bullied by other kids because I was a Star Trek fan. As a result, I often had to keep secret that Star Trek was a passion I had, since it was not seen as socially acceptable. Sadly, at times when I admitted to being a Star Trek fan, violence would often result.
In my adulthood, I and others have personally faced bullying by people who are fellow Star Trek fans. It's high time this stopped. Star Trek teaches that bullying is wrong, and the Star Trek fanbase is better than to bully.
All forms of bullying are unacceptable, no matter who the victim is, where they are from or any other aspect of their lives. Although I won't benefit from this fund personally, I am motivated to try to help those in need who are suffering hardships associated with being bullied, as I did in my childhood.
Unfortunately, youngsters are especially susceptible to bullying. Over 30% of children and young people experienced bullying in the last year, with nearly one child in every classroom experiencing bullying every day. Bullying significantly impacts a child's life and their experience of adulthood. Adults who were bullied as a child are more likely to:
- Experience a range of mental health issues
- Leave school with no qualifications
- Not be in stable relationships
It's time for those who truly subscribe to the principles of Star Trek to make a stand against bullying. Donate today to make a difference and help us to stop bullying for good.
