Story
In January this year I lost my girlfriend of 11years (Lizzie) due to clear cell sarcoma cancer. Lizzie fought a brave battle and never once complained during the 3.5years. I sat and wondered how she is managing so well after the various operations, which from the outside you would have never known what she had been going through, her mental strength was truly amazing whether that was for her, me or keeping a brave face for her two young children she left behind. Sadly, the statistics suggest that 1 in 2 of us will be affected by some form of the many cancers during our lifetime. My small effort to raise money for the local Cancer Center and the ongoing research in Lizzie's name may bring a little hope to someone’s life in the future. The care given to Lizzie during her time in hospital was outstanding, the staff and support was truly amazing. I cannot thank the Centre enough. My only wish would have been a different ending, but I remain grateful to all at Clatterbridge cancer hospital.
Just 2 weeks after Lizzie's passing, I took part in a short 5km walk around Liverpool city centre and raised 2.8k GBP from friends and family donations for the same cancer charity. I have now set myself a new challenge, I've signed up to trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC) which is 5,364 m (17,598 ft) above sea level to raise money for the Clatterbridge Cancer Charity again. Between 3-12 people die each year on this trek, many are heli-vac'd off the mountain due to the altitude sickness and or other injuries on the 12-day trek up & down. My hope is to raise £5,000 (as much as possible really!). For this event I would welcome support from any company to donate. If you would care to sponsor me, I’d like to repay your thanks by taking your company flag on the trek and share a picture of it, myself and the Clatterbridge flag together at the camp. if there is interest, please send me a message to my email (antony.swift1@gmail.com) so we can arrange the flags to be delivered.
I am self funding this event +£3k so all donations go directly to the charity
Details of the trek and a few pics are available in the galley pics.
A bit about Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, it is the only dedicated charity for patients and research at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. The Centre makes over 220,000 patient contacts to over 30,000 patients a year, offering pioneering chemotherapy, radiotherapy and proton therapy treatments from eighteen operating sites across Merseyside and Cheshire, and including the Isle of Man
By choosing to support our Charity, you will help us to improve patient experience, fund vital research, the latest therapies and innovations in cancer treatment.
We are so often told that The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is unlike any other hospital. We pride ourselves on providing an environment in which patients receive the best possible experience, with the special touches that mean so much.
It is so important to us that we can do this for our patients, at our centres in Liverpool, Wirral and Aintree along with our network of chemotherapy clinics in hospitals across the region.
