Story

Hi all

On Sunday 21 April 2024 I will be running the London Marathon for the second time for the charity Fight for Sight.

For those of you who don't know I was diagnosed with a rare eye condition at the age of 4, called Choroideremia. My mum and our family set up the Tommy Salisbury Fund within the charity Fight for Sight and since then family, friends and so many other people have worked tirelessly to raise money for medical research into finding a cure or treatment. The fund has currently raised £714,000.

So many amazing people have supported my fund and now I feel honoured to be able to do my bit and lead Team Tommy 2024 along the 26.2 mile route in April. We have 6 runners in total!

In 2019 I was part of a clinical trial, which may not have happened if it wasn't for my fund, which supported the early stages of the study making the first worldwide clinical happen in 2011 for Choroideremia. After five years and check-up's every six months there is still no deterioration in the treated eye nearly 5 years on.

Choroideremia is a rare genetic eye condition, that causes progressive loss of vision that affects males. The first symptom of this condition is usually an impairment of night vision, which can occur in early childhood. A progressive narrowing of the field of vision follows. These vision problems are due to an ongoing loss of cells in the specialised light-sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eye and a nearby network of blood vessels. However, all individuals with this condition will develop blindness, most commonly in late adulthood.

Please support me in helping to find a treatment for myself and other people with Choroideremia, saving our sight and giving us all a future where we can see.

Thank you so much for your support, see you at the Finish Line for a beer!

Tommy

One in five people will have a serious sight condition in their life time. Sight loss doesn’t care who you are or where you are from; anyone can be affected.

I'm fundraising for Fight for Sight to help fund ground-breaking research into sight loss.

The fight against sight loss is on the cusp of many breakthroughs, but we urgently need the funding to get there. Your donation to help me hit my target will help fund that research, and create a world everyone can see. Thank you.
