Fundraising for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation
My Name'5 Doddie Foundation has ploughed millions into MND research in the last few years, and we hope that a breakthrough in treatment will be just around the corner, to help the countless current and future victims of MND.
To that end, on wed 5th February, starting in Stranraer, I will be cycling with the Dodd1e5 Gr4nd S7am Team 1100k across Scotland before arriving in Edinburgh on Sat 8th February in time for the Scotland Vs Ireland 6 nations game on sun 9th February.
The route takes in a large section of the border towns before heading west to Greenock, following the coast to Helensburgh, on through the stunning Trossachs before heading north; along the stunning pass through Braemar, the Glenshee ski resort, Royal Deeside and back down the east coast to the Capital.
As in previous challenges, Rugby Clubs across Scotland will welcome the participating teams, feeding and accommodating rest stops for the teams.
We could be accused of being mad attempting a cycle challenge in Scotland in early February but, as Doddie did say: “if you get a chance to do something, take it. It might be your one and only chance”.
So who am I?
Tom Leefe (Team Cyclist, co-founder of Flint Office Group, Brain tumour survivor and one of the original 4 Doddie 500 / Wounded Lions riders. Played rugby for Dorking Rugby Club and coached at Farnham Rugby Club - junior section) Committed Road, Gravel and Penny Farthing cyclist and MND fund raiser.
Everyone involved, including me, had a connection with Doddie, either socially or through playing with or against him back in the day, and will all be taking part in this challenge to support his legacy and anyone's future fight against Motor Neurone Disease and I am looking for your support.
All monies raised will go directly to the charity, and into research to find effective treatments for this dreadful disease - Motoneuron disease.
All cyclist and support crew participants will cover their own ride and support vehicles costs personally.
This challenge will be insignificant compared to the challenges faced every day by those impacted by MND. I recognise that there will undoubtably be times that my physical and mental health will be tested over the duration of the challenge. However, I know this is nothing like the struggles those with MND live with…… and will continue to do so until we find a cure.
Fundraising enables The Foundation to continue making research grants for centres researching MND throughout the UK, and supporting directly those impacted directly by MND.
Your support will enable the team to know that their efforts are making a difference, taking pride in contributing to the eradication of MND.
I am excited to be part of this Challenge and hope you can give as much or as little as you can.
