Story
NYAS are a leading children's rights based charity who support children and young people in care. They listen to what children and young people want, care about what they say, and empower them to get their voice heard. NYAS ensures children's wishes and feelings are expressed and acted upon to improve their situation and help them build a better future.
I have volunteered with NYAS for eight years as an Independent Visitor in the Solihull Local Authority. The Independent Visitor service ensures that children and young people in care have a stable adult in their lives and funding from NYAS allows for them to engage in activities and opportunities that they may miss out on compared to their peers. I supported my first young person from the age of thirteen, when he had significant behaviour challenges at school. I was able to support him through his transition to a different placement in Wales, and then onto moving into supported living. While the other adults change, NYAS remains constant.
NYAS relies on donations to provide this invaluable service. I will be aiming to complete the 38.6 km walk (including 1585 m ascent) in less than 12 hours. All money raised will go to NYAS to continue providing opportunities for young people in care.
