Story
In 2020, a good friend of many years, Andy, was diagnosed with Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD is a lot easier to say and spell), a type of muscular dystrophy caused by genetic mutation. FSHD and all other types of muscular dystrophy cause various groups of muscles in the body to weaken and waste away.
As a way of trying to help - after helping Andy and his wife Susie, in their new home - I'll be cycle touring, from Gibraltar, through southern Spain, heading north east then west to reach and ride over the Pyrennees, probably along the Ruta via de la Plata, and parts of cycle routes Euro Velo 1 & 3. Then northwards through France, following the Velodyssee, Velo Francette, to a ferry crossing over the Engish Channel and ride with friends through England to Gibraltar Farm at Silverdale near my home. I will be camping and carry my own camping gear on the bike. I'll also use Warm Showers, an organisation for cycle tourists, and occasional hotels or airbnb accommodation.
I'm familiar with long bike rides, and this should be enjoyable, but at 68 years old I'm aware this is something of a challenge. All money raised will be donated to the charity, I’m paying for my own travel and accommodation (and beer 😉)
