Story
We are fundraising St Benedict's Hospice in memory of Dr Tim Lovel who died peacefully on 22nd March 2025, aged 89.
“man has a right to live well until he dies, and to die in dignity and comfort and peace”
This was Tim’s abiding belief and he was passionate about providing the very best palliative care. He worked as Medical Director of St Benedict’s from 1988 until his retirement in 2000, continuing as a director of the hospice until 2017. He also worked with other hospices throughout the North East and internationally.
In 1995 he became Professor of Palliative Care at Sunderland University and was subsequently awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science at the university in 2001.
Tim is remembered for his kindness, compassion and gentle humour, the time he spent getting to know his patients and his calm and reassuring manner, combined with his impressive clinical knowledge. His mission was to treat the human being rather than “fix” their illness with his abiding belief expressed in this phrase from 15th century folklore that a medical professional's duty was:
“to cure sometimes, to relieve often, to comfort always”
Dad achieved all this and more and leaves a legacy his family will be proud of for ever.
