Story
Recognition:
50 years ago, a special teacher, Lawrence Whitehouse (aka "Luigi") inspired a generation of students at Farnborough Grammar School (later becoming Farnborough Sixth Form College) and we are just three of these "Old Fernebergians". He remains an inspiration to us for many reasons and this walk is in recognition of the positive impact he had on so many lives and the fact that he was and is a thoroughly good bloke.
Our objectives:
To complete the Wainwright Coast To Coast Walk continuously within three weeks as a three-person team with a combined age of 203 years. We believe this will be the oldest known three person team to complete this challenge; and
To raise a target of at least £1,000 for Fix the Fells, a charity nominated by The Wainwright Society; The British Heart Foundation; and The Saracens Sports Foundation.
Fix the Fells:
Repairing and maintaining our ancient network of Lake District mountain paths is an enormous task. Many of the paths have been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Despite their age, these paths need help. The combination of millions of feet and the Lake District's weather means that erosion is a constant problem.
Fix the Fells has repaired over 200 sections of paths in the last ten years. Over the next ten years they aim to repair a further 120 paths, whilst continuing to maintain the existing network.
Their work also helps protect the local ecology and heritage. The Lake District is full of rare plant species that are vulnerable to damage when people walk on them. Preventing erosion reduces the volume of soil going into our rivers and streams and improves the water quality too
To deliver this Fix the Fells are looking to raise £5 million from grants, visitors and local businesses and communities. Please donate to Fix the Fells today to help protect and enhance the spectacular Lakeland
