Story
This June, The Paul Lavelle Foundation and our friends at Tri4life are setting off on another memory lasting ride through Europe, commemorating the 80Th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
One team of 64 cyclists and support riders
The start of our cycling journey, we shall be travelling to Calais in France where we shall then cycle 31 miles to Dunkirk paying our respects at Dunkirk memorial cemetery before cycling 24 miles to Ypres the area of Passchendaele, a place of one of history’s most horrific battles, here we are staying the night and paying our respects at the Menin Gate.
The gate was built as a memorial to the missing of World War one, it is here most of the commonwealth soldiers started their journey into Flanders field, so many never to return.
We shall then be observing the minute silence at 8pm to those soldiers and all who gave their lives as the town has done each night since 1st May 1929 with the playing of the last post.
Day two we will then cycle 82 miles to Antwerp in Belgium in Belgium and again attend a war memorial paying our respects when we finish this ride.
Day three will see us then cycle 106 miles to Arnhem finishing at The John Frost bridge famous for the film `a Bridge too Far` a battle of legendary status with the Airbourne Parachute regiment divisions, the men formed part of Operation Market Garden having originally formed part of the Normandy landings that landed in June 1944
Day Four our final day we shall start by paying our respects at Oostebeek war memorial cemetery in Arnhem where some 1,684 commonwealth servicemen of the second World War are buried here.
From here we will then head to Rotterdam cycling 78 miles for our Ferry Journey home.
At each memorial we shall be laying formal wreaths, we will be representing the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, The Armed Forces Covenant and the Commonwealth Association, more information shall be released in time.
We shall be raising funds and awareness for our charity and our cause along the journey and highlighting the need for male support and their wellbeing.
We will also be donating a percentage after the journey to both our named charities, Claire House whom we have had a fantastic relationship with since we started and also Scotty’s little soldiers, a wonderful charity which offers support for bereaved military children…. as always we aim to create friendship and memories in the name of our mate Paul along the way, this is going to be the biggest yet, a lifetime memory.
