Story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising effort in memory of Professor Nina Barnett, 1965-2023.

We are aiming to raise £30,000 in Nina's name to establish an annual bursary for pharmacy and medical students, administered by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, who support over 120 students a year from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Nina has been called a visionary, a trailblazer, a titan, an inspiration - she was it all. She influenced so many people over the years through the services she started and the pharmacy teams she trained. It was her strong belief and core to her values that everyone should have the opportunity to study and follow their dreams. She understood all too well that finance, or lack of it, puts people off trying and while she leaves many a legacy through her profession, this is by far the one that she would feel most passionate about. I have no doubt that it's the sort of thing she would have set up herself, if she'd had the years ahead of her.

Nina broke through many a glass ceiling, not just for pharmacy, but also for women in the profession. She had many firsts: one of the first consultant pharmacist in the UK, supplementary prescriber then Non-Medical Prescriber. Her contributions to pharmacy were wide reaching and she achieved many awards. She worked with many different professions like doctors, pharmacists, students (medical and pharmacy), nurses, patients, lawyers, academics, clinical pharmacologists, disability advocates, to name a few. Her passion was across the full spectrum of healthcare professionals and she dedicated her life to its service.

By establishing this bursary, every year a medical or pharmacy student in financial difficulty will benefit from the support that this will bring.

Thank you.
