Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!
On Sunday 21st April 2024 I will be running the London Marathon to raise awareness and funds on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the world’s leading charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research.
Just over a year ago, our 3-year-old son Rory was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, a chronic and lifelong autoimmune disease which requires meticulous management to avoid both immediate and long-term health complications.
Whilst the exact cause is still unknown, type 1 diabetes is a result of the body’s immune system destroying the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. It is not currently preventable nor are there links to lifestyle (unlike type 2 diabetes). There is also no cure and, despite the advances in technology, living with type 1 is still a 24/7 balancing act of avoiding dangerous highs and even more dangerous lows through constant monitoring of diet, exercise, mood, sleep, sickness and other factors which all affect the stability of blood-glucose levels. With an active 3-year-old you can imagine the fun and games!
We are so proud of Rory who takes much of it in his stride, but it would be rather brilliant if a cure was found! This is why we support JDRF whose ultimate aim is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and liberate children (and adults) from the constant monitoring, challenges and dangers that come with this complex and oftentimes exhausting condition.
If you are able to donate any amount, I would be hugely grateful!
Many thanks,
Tessa Agar
