My challenge is a mighty BIG one I am going to walk 600 miles in 60 days.
That’s 10 miles every single day come hail, rain or shine.
I’m doing this in memory of my Mum Tilly Cassidy who passed away peacefully in Dr Kershaws hospice in January 2024. She will be in my thoughts every step of the way.
Mum was welcomed into the hospice, 2 weeks before she died, on Dec 21st 2023 - I use the word welcomed because she really was & so were we as a family.
To those people who have never experienced the amazing care given by a hospice team, some of the words I use to describe Mums stay there might sound strange - happiness, love, laughter, joy - to name but a few & to say her last 2 weeks were filled with love & happiness - I couldn’t be more honest. Mum was cared for by the staff as if she was family, nothing was too much trouble, they cared for us, as a family, the same way too.
The day Mum arrived she was shown to her own en suite room overlooking the beautiful gardens, a lovely nurse popped in minutes later to see if Mum fancied a shower or a bubble bath, she opted for a shower. When I returned to her room a short while later she was singing the praises of the nurse & in awe of the warm fluffy towels used to dry her. Shortly afterwards another member of staff popped in to see if she wanted to go to the Christmas Carol Concert 🎶 about to start in the lounge. She did want to go, so she was whisked off in a comfortable wheelchair & we both enjoyed a pleasant musical afternoon provided by a local senior school. She was unable to enjoy a mince pie or a tipple, her condition was such she could no longer have liquid or solids.
The staff were unable to tell us how long we would have before she passed, but they were able to reassure us she would never be in any pain or discomfort. They were there all over Christmas & into the New Year caring for Mum & supporting us. There was no limit on visiting times or how long I stayed, my time with Mum was so special, there was nothing left unsaid.
Unfortunately Dr Kershaws hospice, like all other hospices, are not NHS funded, end of life care in the beautiful way it is provided & the calm relaxing surroundings comes at a high cost, which is why I’m raising money - to give back & say a massive thank you.
Every penny I raise will be appreciated, your donation no matter how much - big or small - will make a difference for another family in the future, ensuring that the care can continue.
