Story
This is Mabel. She is going through something that no 10 year old should ever have to face. Diagnosed with leukaemia in November 2022, Mabel has shown an enormous amount of strength and bravery over the last six months. Despite the intense treatment, she has decided to raise £10,000 in one year for the Time for A Change appeal at St George's hospital in London -
On Saturday 24 June, four out-of-shape, middle-aged dads will be attempting to ride their bikes across the country in one day to raise money for Team Mabel.
Starting at the seaside in Kent at 4:30am, we will set off west with the intention of not stopping until we reach the sea on the other side of the country - some 205 miles away in Weston-Super-Mare. Ideally we will be completing this before sunset at 9.30pm.
Our team is made up of :-
- Simon Eddy
- Jamie Tutton
- Mark Davis
- Paul Crayford
A note below from her mum & dad...
"Six months ago life as we knew it changed completely when we received the devastating news that our then 9 year old daughter, Mabel, had leukaemia. We were suddenly thrown into a world we didn't want to be in - one that felt incredibly scary and challenging.
We were broken, but an amazing team of nurses, doctors, play specialists and charity volunteers stepped into action to provide the very best care to not only our daughter but to the rest of our family.
We've now spent more time on the Pinckney ward than we have in our own home and while we can't ask for a better team, the facilities are outdated, tired and uninviting.
Time for a Change appeal is raising £5M to transform these facilities for patients and staff. Not only will they expand the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, but the wards will become bright, welcoming spaces and there will be better facilities for the staff who work so tirelessly.
Mabel is asking family and friends to help her raise money for the appeal. It's very important to her that she gives back to the hospital, but it's also great that she has something positive to focus on during some very challenging treatment.
Friends of Team Mabel will be taking part in several challenges over the next few months to raise as much money as possible for the appeal and any donation is gratefully received.
Go Team Mabel!"
