The Rhino Charge is an offroad 4x4 event where the cars and drivers work with their team to get their car around the course in the shortest possible distance. The funds raised go towards the protection of Kenya's water tower ecosystems.

Story

Rhino Ark raises money for the building of electric eco-fences around mountain ecosystems in Kenya, namely Aberdare National Park, Mt. Kenya and Mau Eburu . This provides an "ark" for wildlife such as rhino, leopard, elephant and mountain bongo but also safeguards vital upland watertable habitats for Kenya.

Story

In the last years the Rhino Ark’s main conservation efforts, the safeguarding of our forests and natural water catchment areas have never been more important. They have battled to put out forest fires in the Aberdares and Eburru and their fences have helped reduce human-wildlife conflict at a time when all are struggling for water.

Team Chomz, in its 18th Charge as a unit, believes that the experience and the reach that Rhino Ark has, through the Rhino Charge event, its followers, its sponsors and its impact on a global scale, will be one of the movements to assist and mitigate this life-threatening impact of global climate change. (See individual Stories Below)

With your generous donation we hope to increase our continued support for the Rhino Ark, therefore assisting their investment into preserving Kenya’s flora and fauna.

Best memory of charge - car broken down in a valley, team had run out of drinking water in the mid morning sun after battling through a tough section, all looked doomed then we see a young maasai boy who spoke no Swahili and we communicated with him through sign language and actions , showed him a note of 1000/- as reward if he ran up to the control and got us some water. The funnier part was the control officials only gave him 500ml 🤣.

Why do I do this charge year on year- for memories like the above, the fraternity of chargers and officials, the cause and my connection with the African bush. I love it.

First Charge – 2021

Number of Charges – 4

Best Memory – My first charge. We hit a tree stump and broke the steering Rod Bolt.

I was under the car trying to repair it and found that we did not have any long bolts to do the job. I thought this is my first charge and we are done after about 6 check point. I was still under the car thinking what I can do, when my eye caught the back part of the chassis where our mechanic must have left two bolts fastened to the chassis that had no use. It happened to be the right length and so we fixed the Steering and ended up finishing 12 check points.

Why we do this year on – I have been at Charge since 2012 manning a guard post until I started charging in 2021 and that too I was a replacement for another member due to Covid. Should have started 20 years earlier. Besides the fundraising for this noble cause, it’s the memories and stories we go back with each year and always looking forward to the next. Highlight is you get to see parts of Kenya that are the most amazing.
