Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
The conflict in Sudan and the ongoing suffering of the Sudanese people resonates very deeply with me. My family in Khartoum were caught in the crossfires in their homes, while fighting between the army and paramilitary forces erupted on the eve of the Eid. They did not get to wear their Eid clothes or eat 'kaak' eid cookies nor rejoice and celebrate the Eid after the long month of fasting over Ramadan. The children did not get their 'Eidiya' (pocket money given during the Eid) to go and spend on sweets or treats and there was no sound of their laughter and chatter in the neighbourhood streets. Instead all that was heard for weeks was the deafening noise of gunfire and bombing.
My mum, sister and my young nieces lived in constant fear for days on end with bullets and heavy artillery raining around them. I lived these moments with them on the end of the phone from the safety of my home in Birmingham. During those days I would call regularly to check on them, when mobile networks were available, and would often hear the sound of gunfire in the background. I urged them to evacuate Khartoum where the fighting was the hardest and was escalating with no hope in sight of it ending soon. Faced with the threat to their lives, no electricity for days, dwindling food supplies and my mother’s medication running out, they made the hard decision to leave their home and evacuate Khartoum to go to Egypt. They embarked on a 5 day journey passing through the devastation on the streets on their way out of Khartoum with bullets sounding around them and fearing for their lives. Travelling on a bus laden with kids, elderly people, and limited supplies passing through several check points leaving Khartoum and various towns on route to cross the border to Egypt and reach safety.
My family, unlike many others, are now safe from the atrocities of this mindless war.
This war is still ongoing with thousands dead, dying and injured and millions displaced internally or forced to take refuge in neighbouring countries. Many have been forced to stay behind to look after their elderly or due to lack of funds to travel to areas of safety. They now find themselves with no access to basic necessities such as food, clean water, and medical supplies.
This is why we have decided to take up the Welsh 3 peaks challenge in 24 hours to raise funds and awareness to the plight of the Sudanese people affected by the conflict.
