Story
Hey, thanks for visiting my fundraising page! I'm running the 2024 NYC Marathon to raise money for kids to go to summer camp. There's this amazing organization called SCOPE, which raises money each year to partner existing summer camps to new campers who may not have the funds to go to camp and pays their way. It costs $1500 to send one camper to sleep-away camp for 2 weeks, but the experience and change they'll have in their lives is priceless. My goal is to raise enough to send 2 campers this year. Well, that's my low baseline goal. I'd like to send 20, but we'll see how it goes...
I didn't find summer camp until I was 28, when I was a staff member at Camp IHC for the first time. It was amazing - the adventure that my wife Jerrica and I have been on since finding summer camp has been unbelievable. We've met people from all over the world, seen kids learn and grow while being away from their parents, and have witnessed over 1000 people at one time being completely silent for over a minute reflecting on their week, which is no small feat.
I'm running and fundraising so that more kids can have that experience. Hopefully they'll learn that it's okay to laugh, sing, dance, cry, build fires and make memories - like we do at camp. The world would be a better place if we all had more summer camp.
I also am running for my daughter Rowan, who will be 8 months old when I run the marathon. She won't remember at all, but she'll be there. I hope to tell her the story someday and show her pictures of how dad did something hard, something scary, something that took a lot of training and something that most people think is crazy. But he did it, and he did it so that she'll know that it's okay to do hard things.
"You've been training your whole life for this" is something you've heard me say if you've ever spent any time around me. Training for what? You might wonder. The answer is anything. I believe that every experience we've had previously has prepared us for the challenge we are about to face, and that every moment has led to this one. So while I start training for the marathon, I hope you join the movement of looking at the next day in your life as something you've been training for.
