Story
I am walking a marathon for Action for A-T because I want to join the fight to find a cure for Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T).
On Sun 24th Sep '23, I'm 1 of 55 Colleagues from Constellation Automotive Group (CAG) walking a marathon across the Surrey Hills! We will start and end our marathon in Epsom, spending the day following various trails and footpaths across and climbing 749m (2,457ft).
This marathon is in aid of the wonderful charity Action for A-T who provide support to families and funds high quality peer reviewed medical research to speed up the process of identifying a cure for Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T).
For those with A-T, their life span is shortened, usually due to respiratory failure or cancer. A-T is life-limiting and those affected generally only living until their twenties. There is currently no cure for A-T and no treatments to slow down or stop the progression of this devastating disease.
A-T is a rare, genetic degenerative disease of childhood which affects multiple systems of the human body. In people affected with A-T a gene called ATM is mutated, which leads to a lack of, or no production of the ATM protein. As children get older and health deteriorates, cells in the Central Nervous System start to die, leading to an overall loss of coordination and muscle control. Children are usually confined to a wheelchair by the age of 10 and will need assistance with everyday tasks.
