Story

I'm Amelie Ward, also known as Mimi. I've just turned 10 and this October, I'll be cycling 286 miles (460km) in 4 days, from London to Paris, raising awareness and funds for Dravet Syndrome UK.

My 8 year old cousin, Dom, lives with Dravet Syndrome, which is a rare, life-long and life limiting neurological condition that includes severe and prolonged seizures, intellectual disability and a range of associated health conditions, like Autism, ADHD and problems with speech, mobility and sleep. Around one in every 15,000 babies in the UK is born with Dravet Syndrome, and sadly, 1 in 5 don't reach their 18th birthday.

Dravet Syndrome UK (www.dravet.org.uk) is the only charity dedicated to supporting families affected by Dravet Syndrome in the UK. I wanted to raise plenty of funds and awareness for this incredible charity, who have provided support to Dom and his family since his diagnosis, by taking on this huge challenge this year.

Dom has been rushed to hospital many many times and we all worry about him so much, but he always manages to smile and laugh - we love nothing more than spending time with him. I'm sure he'll be tracking where we're at all the way to Paris and sending messages of encouragement too!

Follow my progress:

I'll be the youngest girl to ever attempt the 'full ride/distance' from London to Paris. It's a hugely challenging schedule for cyclists of any age, as I'll be covering over 400km in 4 days! You can follow the lead up and the cycle itself on my instagram page at www.instagram.com/mimis.london2paris.

Day 1: October 2nd: London, Greenwich Park to Dover - 84 miles (135km)

Day 2: October 3rd: Calais to Abbeville - 78 miles (125km)

Day 3: October 4th: Abbeville to Beauvais - 64 miles (103km)

Day 4: October 5th: Beauvais to Paris, Eiffel Tower - 60 miles (97km)

I'm feeling super excited to get started as I have been training with my mother for a while, but at the same time I am really, really nervous and so I need all the support I can get! Knowing that I'm helping those living with Dravet Syndrome will keep me going when things get difficult, so thank you all so much for spreading the word, making donations and encouraging me towards the Eiffel Tower. You're amazing!
