Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My name is Tae Horsfield and I am completing a 10,000ft skydive on the 27th July 2023 for the amazing charity Dyscover I volunteer for.
There are over 350,000 people living with aphasia in the UK alone. Aphasia is a communication disability, most commonly acquired through a stroke or brain injury. It can affect the ability to speak, read, write and understand what’s being said and is a very frustrating and isolating condition.
Although there is ongoing research into producing speech and language therapy techniques to support those living with aphasia, not everyone will fully recover with language function. This means many people living with aphasia struggle with everyday communication.
Dyscover is a charity providing long term support and opportunities to people with aphasia and their families. The charity provides weekly sessions online and in person to help people adjust to living with aphasia. These sessions are led by professional speech and language therapists and supported by volunteers.
Dyscover help their members to develop strategies for communicating, maximise abilities and provide help and support for partners, carers and other family members.
I have been volunteering for Dyscover for a few months and I have met many amazing members. I am an online volunteer and every week I meet with a group of members on zoom and support their conversation of different topics. I have had the opportunity to learn about so many different members lives but also have seen how aphasia can affect people living with the condition in many ways.
One thing I can say is every member at Dyscover I have had the pleasure of meeting is determined to participate in all activities.
I hope that I will be able to be as positive, courageous, and determined as the members at Dyscover when I jump out of the plane. I am most excited to spread the word about aphasia and Dyscovers work supporting and encouraging people living with aphasia. I am most afraid of getting up at 5am to make it to the jump site in time!
If you want to learn more about aphasia or the charity Dyscover please see their website and watch the videos about how Dyscover have supported people living with aphasia. https://www.dyscover.org.uk/
Thank you!
