Story

Hello everyone!

I've taken on a huge challenge this year: I'm running Leicester Half Marathon on Sunday 13 October 2024 to raise much-needed funds and awareness for two incredible charities, Lamp and Bamboozle. Let me tell you why these organisations mean so much to me and why I need your support.

Lamp (Leicestershire Action for Mental Health Project)

As a proud member of the Lamp Business Club, I've seen first-hand the amazing work that Lamp does in our community. Established in 1989, Lamp provides Independent Advocacy for people in Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland. They support individuals in having their voices heard during critical appointments with their GP, Mental Health Team, or during physical health consultations.

Lamp's skilled team of advocates understands the complexities of the mental and physical health systems. They can challenge professionals on behalf of those who feel unable to do so alone. Additionally, their Information and Advice Officers help people find the right services for their circumstances and make referrals on their behalf.

The goal at Lamp is to explore options and empower individuals to speak up, ensuring their voices are heard throughout their recovery journey. This support is invaluable for so many in our community, and I am honoured to run in their name.

Bamboozle Theatre Company

Also, as a proud member of the Fosse Business Breakfast Club, our chosen charity for the year is Bamboozle. This wonderful organisation works to give learning disabled children and their families a voice. Too often, these children are not heard, left out, or made to feel they don’t belong.

Bamboozle unlocks doors for these children by producing immersive and accessible theatre that tours the UK and internationally. They also deliver school projects in the UK and work with families locally and in China. Their innovative approach allows children to find their own voice and express themselves in ways most of us take for granted.

My Journey

I started running during lockdown in 2020 with the 'Couch to 5km' challenge, raising funds for Lamp at that time. Since then, I have continued to run on average once a week, but I haven't ventured beyond 5km. Taking on the Leicester Half Marathon, a 21.1km race, is a massive jump up and a huge challenge for me having just celebrated my 55 birthday at the end of July! However, for these two fantastic causes, I am willing to push myself through the gruelling training required and put my mind and body to the test! ;)

My mantra is "I am not this body, I am not this mind, I am spirit, I am soul - I can do and achieve anything that I put my mind and body to."

This will be a real test of mental and physical resilience, as well as endurance.

How You Can Help

Your support can make a real difference. Please donate to my JustGiving page. Every contribution, no matter how small, helps these fantastic charities continue their vital work.

Together, we can ensure that everyone, regardless of their mental health challenges or learning disabilities, has a voice and the support they need.

Thank you for your generosity and encouragement. Let’s make a difference together! :)

About the charity

Mental Health is complex. Our advocacy work involves, listening, guiding, planning, supporting and ensuring their needs are properly considered. Mental Health cannot be ‘cured’ with one conversation, it takes time to form trust. Our advocates devote hours, days, months to provide the best support.
