Hello there!

On an ordinary Friday in January last year, I went to work unaware that it was going to become one of the most important days of my life.

That morning a man – Steven - had a cardiac arrest at the wheel of his car and crashed.

The British Heart Foundation has a motto: Be ready for that day.

For me, that was the day.

With the help of my colleagues, we smashed a window of the car, and managed to get Steven out, then I started giving hm CPR until the ambulance arrived.

Happily, he survived, and I was later told that the CPR had saved Steven’s life.

Later that year we both went to London where I was named a Heart Hero by the BHF.

It feels odd to be called a hero. I just did something that I could do that needed to be done. The biggest thing in my head was ensuring that Steven would have more time with his family.

There are around 3,100 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in Scotland each year and the survival rate in is just one in 10. Early CPR and defibrillation can more than double the chances of survival.

On June 15, 2024, my wife Morag and I will be participating in Tough Mudder Scotland 2024, a challenging marathon event that pushes us to our limits. But it's not just about the physical challenge; it's about making a difference in the lives of those affected by heart and circulatory diseases.

The British Heart Foundation has made incredible progress in reducing the number of lives lost to these diseases, through research and awareness of CPR. However, every day, hundreds of people still lose their lives.
