Keeping the tradition of bellringing alive in Stretham and the Diocese of Ely.
As well as having an active band of local bellringers, St James' Stretham is also the home of the Ely District ringing education centre. Here volunteers are actively engaged in training new recruits to bell ringing from a wide area around Ely and Cambridge
The Stretham Tower Enhancement Project (STEP) aims to keep the bells of St James ringing for church services and local and national events for centuries to come.
STEP aims to raise £45,000. This will enable:
Thorough maintenance of the six bells and their fittings, last done over 70 years ago
Installation of a full-height glass screen in the arched opening above the ringing balcony giving a light warm ringing room and a sound-controlled meeting room
Two new ‘Training Bells’ which will provide a modern teaching aid so that the next generation of bellringers can more easily learn this great tradition
