Story

Colon cancer prevention is a cause that is dear to my heart and is an issue that impacts my family directly. My mother was saved thanks to early detection of colon cancer!

Last year we lost our good friend firefighter Captain Billy Marr. I promised Billy that we would continue our journey to give more people access to colon cancer screening and help our firefighters.

I would be honoured if you would support me as I hike the GUT trail at Ski Wentworth to help get more Nova Scotians to complete their Home FIT test and help find more cancers early at the Dartmouth General Hospital‘s new 3rd endoscopy suite

Thanks to this new Endo Suite at DGH - the wait time for a FIT positive colonoscopy is gone. You will get in urgently.

Every day one Nova Scotian dies from a disease that is 90% preventable. That disease is colorectal cancer. 2025 will mark the 17th Anniversary of Get Up There (GUT), which raises funds and awareness to support colorectal cancer screening and prevention. Funds raised through GUT have helped the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation purchase state-of-the-art equipment and technology used to screen for colorectal cancer. In late 2022, Dartmouth General Hospital opened a 3rd Endoscopy Suite which is being used exclusively for screening FIT-positive patients, thanks to the efforts of GUT participants, sponsors and donors.

Last year's GUT campaign supported a public awareness effort aimed at encouraging more individuals to complete and return their FIT tests. Currently, only 40% of individuals who receive the kit complete and return it. Funds raised this year will continue to focus on improving FIT return rates across Nova Scotia. Together, let's make a difference!
