Story
My name is Stella and I’m 11 years old . I was born with a genetic disorder called NF1 . This affects around 1 in 2500 people , with around 25,000 people in the UK currently diagnosed with the condition . NF1 is one of the most common neuro genetic conditions that can cause people to experience among other things nerve tumours to grow , severe growths or facial disorders , lumps and tumours to form , multiple birth marks and learning difficulties may also be present.
During my first visit to Great Ormond Steet Hospital I was witness to the many children who were not only suffering with their own conditions, diseases and traumas but also severe hair loss . From this moment on I decided to try and help them by growing my hair with the idea of donating it in order that wigs could be made for these children.
In 2017 I had my first hair cut , 18 inches were cut off and the hair was donated to the Princesses Trust . Together with a fund raising effort I raised £950 which was then split in two , one half given to Great Ormond Street and one half to the childhood tumour trust. My story went on to be covered by both local and national newspapers.
Following this my story was picked up by an incredible charity group - who intern granted me a wish and it is now my wish to help them create more amazing wishes come true for others .
It’s now 2023 and I’m now on a mission to donate my hair again to the Princesses trust , some 23 inches in length this time and to try and raise over £1000 to help the charity “ Rays of sunshine” who help to make children’s wishes come true .
Rays of sunshine is a national charity that brightens the lives of seriously unwell young people by granting wishes and providing ongoing support in hospitals and within the community. Please feel free to visit their website :
