Story
As a club, St Dympnas GFC are climbing Mount Snowdon in memory of our dear friend and club stalwart, John Gormley.
John lived and breathed GAA, with a lifetime of service to the sport, including 49 years to St Dympnas GFC. After his playing days John went on to hold every role he possibly could both on the Club Committee for St Dympnas as well as the Hertfordshire County Board.
However, John didn’t stop there, his passion and love for the game saw him also heavily involved with GAA across Britain and Provincial. One of his greatest honours was in 2006 when he held the role as President of the Provincial Council of Britain for three years until 2009. John was also a current Club Committee member and a Council Delegate to the GAA Central Council. He was a true ambassador for the GAA and has left a big hole within St Dympnas and the GAA Community, which is why we are taking on this challenge in his memory.
John was also Chair of the ABC Committee, something which John was a big driving force behind. Nothing would have made John happier than to be at the ABC’s driving around on his golf buggy (as pictured above) overseeing the event and watching over 3,500 children, including his own grandchildren playing Gaelic football. As a club we are honoured that the ABC committee have recognised John’s contribution and have renamed the U15 Boys All Britain Competition Trophy in memory of John. A very fitting tribute for such a special man, which will allow his legacy and love for the game to live on for many years to come.
The club will be walking alongside some of Johns family on 5th October as we climb to the top of Mount Snowdon. If you would like to support our fundraising efforts and donate in memory of John, please feel free to make a donation and leave your fondest memory of John in the comments.
All money raised will be donated to Keech Hospice Care who, as part of their incredible work within the local area, provided John and the Gormley family vital support throughout their journey.
