Story
This Christian Aid Week we share the challenges experienced by communities in Malawi.
Covid, climate change, conflict in Ukraine and the cost-of-living crisis mean that in Malawi food, fuel, fertiliser, and school fees have doubled in price in the last 12 months. Hard-working farmers are seeing their harvests fail as the climate crisis brings increasingly erratic weather.
The impact of the recent Cyclone Freddy in Malawi has been devastating. Over 500,000 people have been displaced and hundreds have lost their lives.
But there is hope. This Christian Aid Week, we look at how our partners in Malawi are helping farmers transform their livelihoods using the humble but mighty pigeon pea: a drought-resistant, soil-revitalising, high-protein, low-cost, delicious crop.
Christian Aid have been helping to develop a sustainable pigeon pea harvest. As the pea roots grow deep, they can withstand heavy rain, or if there is a drought, they can find nourishment at a greater depth.
As well as growing a resilient crop against climate change, Christian Aid partners are working with the farmers teaching them business skills, restore soil fertility and helping them join cooperatives to earn more from their crops.
The mighty pigeon pea is an essential part of the diet of millions of people globally.
Your gifts this May will continue to support the pigeon pea project and other vital work around the world. For thousands of farming families in Malawi, pigeon peas are a route out of poverty.
For over 70 years Christian Aid has been standing with the poorest of our neighbours, with people of all faiths and none, to stand up for dignity, equality and justice.
Let’s stand together with our neighbours near and far this Christian Aid week.
