Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

In 1986 at the age of 19 my Dad was involved in a car accident that changed his life. He suffered severe brain trauma and was in a coma for over two weeks following the accident. Initially it was not known whether he would survive.

Dad had to undergo intense rehabilitation in order to learn how to walk again as he was left paralysed down one side of his body. His balance was wiped out and he could not stand. Dad also had immense difficulty recalling new memories and he was left with little to no short term memory. Written and verbal memory was permanently and severely impacted and has persisted. He received care from the excellent teams at the BRI Hospitals, the Burden Institute and Headway.

Over many years Dad began to improve. Although his memory is still greatly affected by the accident, the help he received from Headway helped him gain back his quality of life.

Throughout his life Dad has completed four half marathons in order to raise money for Headway, the most recent being 2012. At the start of this year I also got into running and we decided to run a half marathon together and again raise money for Headway. We have decided to run the Westonbirt Arboretum Half Marathon together on the 23 June 2024.

Without the support from Headway my Dad would not be where he is today and would not have recovered in the miraculous way he has. If you feel that you would like to support us in our effort by donating, we would be extremely grateful.
