Story
Sol, alongside a group of six other runners is helping to raise money for the Workneh Dechasa Education Foundation, by competing in the London Landmarks Half Marathon on the 6th of April 2025.
Workneh Dechasa was born in Gudar in the Oromia region of Ethiopia in 1960. He was passionate about education for all and spent most of his working life in Camden, supporting refugee children's access to education.
Currently, approximately 17 million children in Ethiopia, spanning pre-primary, primary, and secondary levels, are out of education. Many children that do attend school often have to travel long distances, which is very high cost in terms of time, transport, energy and safety.
Workneh planned that, when he retired, he would build a school in his home village for the children of his local community. Sadly, in May 2019, Workneh passed away. In his memory, his widow, Aster and son Yadata have committed themselves to realising Workneh's ambition of building a school in Guder by forming the Workneh Dechasa Education Foundation.
The charity is close to Sol’s heart as Workneh was his beloved godfather. Workneh was a gentle, understanding and compassionate person, who was committed to the needs of others.
The overall aim is to raise £100,000 via sponsorships and fundraising events, which in cooperation with a sister charity in Oromia will be used to build and run the school.
Any donations would be massively appreciated,
Thank You
