Story

This stunning mural painted by Chris Rutterford at 21-23 Slater's Steps in Edinburgh depicts the medieval legend of the Holy Rood.

David I was King of Scotland in 1123 and eventually became a saint. Instead of going to church for the feast of the Holy Cross, he goes hunting. Whilst in the woods he is thrown by his horse and he is cornered by a massive white stag. Just when the stag is about to gore him, he sees a glowing cross between its horns and reaches out and grabs it. The stag takes fright and bolts. David saw this as a message from God and built Holyrood Abbey on the same spot.

The stag is depicted in statues and imagery throughout Edinburgh to this day. Perhaps this legend was an inspiration for Harry Potter’s stag patronus in the books?

This mural was created in aid of Maggie's Centres. They provide free expert care and support for those living with cancer, their loved ones and healthcare professionals. If you enjoy the mural, please consider donating for this great cause.
