Story
Hi and thanks for stopping by the page!
Simon and Garry are about to embark on an epic challenge of not one, but two Marathons in 2024 - London and Berlin. Simon is an old hand at these things but Garry. despite his (age) wisdom, will be lining up for his very first marathon in April. We’re hugely excited at the prospect of what will be a unique year, run on behalf of a cause close to both our hearts - Autism.
Training (!) has commenced but we just wanted to tell you a little bit about our stories and why we’re running for Team Autism:
Simon’s Story
Simon’s younger brothers Stephen and Jonathan were both diagnosed with autism at an early age. Both have a passion for movies (particularly Disney films), TV and reading, with regular visits to the cinema being a highlight!
Both Stephen and Jonathan are now over 30 yrs old and work one day a week at a charity shop in Sheffield.
Stephen and Jonathan have been brought up with all the love and support they can wish for and, as they journey into adulthood, will continue to develop social and living skills.
However, we know that this level of care this is not always possible. Many don’t have the same level of support, which is where the team at the National Autistic Society can make such a huge difference to the lives of those living with Autism and their families.
Garry’s Story
Garry’s nephew Jack is full of beans and the happiest of children.
Jack didn’t have all the classic symptoms of autism initially. As a baby and toddler he was showing lots of eye contact, affection and empathy, however, his issues became apparent when he wasn’t reaching his speech milestones. His vocabulary was limited and he would gesture rather than use words which he still does to this day. He has difficulty answering open questions and expressing his needs verbally. His concentration span is very limited and dislikes changes to his routine or environment, such as his bedroom.
He is waiting to see a speech and language therapist (currently a 2 year wait) and a pediatric assessment (18 month wait).
In the meantime his school have been very supportive and have placed him on a SEN pathway (special educational needs) to provide additional support and help develop him.
Jack remains a very happy and loving child who likes socialising, playing with others and most of all cuddles!

Whether or not you’re just able to pass on your best wishes or donate what you’re able to, thank you in advance for your support!
We’ll update you with our progress along the way and will be marking our build up with a few key events as well.
