Story
Paddle with Purpose!
This summer, Matthew Sykes is diving headfirst into an exhilarating charity paddle event. He is an experienced whitewater paddler and will be the first person ever to complete a marathon paddle at the Lee Valley Whitewater Centre which was built for the 2012 London Olympics. He fell in love with the Olympic sport of canoe slalom at the age of 10, training hard to compete at the top level, representing both Great Britain and Ireland at international competitions and the only Deaf competitor to do so. Now he needs your support - join us on Sunday 29th September at the Lee Valley White Water Centre as he paddles 26 miles all in the name of raising funds for SignHealth, a vital deaf mental health charity.
About the Challenge
Matthew will be navigating the Olympic canoe slalom course, as well as the lake. He is gearing up for an adrenaline-fuelled journey that promises excitement at every turn. With your help, he aims to complete the 26-mile challenge within 4–5 hours, including well-deserved breaks – starting with 10 long laps (1) and 40 x short laps.
Why We're Paddling:
Mental health knows no bounds, and neither should access to support. SignHealth is on a mission to provide essential mental health services to the deaf community, ensuring that no one is left behind. By supporting Matthew's charity paddle, you're not just donating to a cause – you're helping to break down barriers and create a brighter future for deaf individuals in need.
