Vote Sherry - The Wallflower
Representing the Campus Y Board of Advisors
As a wallflower, you can learn a lot observing from the sidelines, but sometimes you need to get yourself on the dance floor. Vote for me and get me out there!
A little about me:
My High School Superlative: Most Academic
My Favorite 80's Movie: Raising Arizona
My Favorite Classic TV Show: Family Ties
My Favorite 80's Song: I Melt with You, by Modern English
The Best 80's Fad: Big Hair
It would be really bodacious and totally tubular if you voted for me!
I'm supporting the Campus Y because it gives young people a place to develop leadership skills, guided by staff and peer mentors to provide a safe space to "fail" and try again while avoiding the missteps that could hinder community partners. The Campus Y brings together a community of like minded students, giving them a chance to try service in a meaningful context and letting them see the impact they can have. Relationships formed in the Campus Y last a lifetime, as do the leadership skills young people develop and carry into their communities in adulthood.
If you're not sure how get started with community engagement, find an organization that knows and understands their community, and just jump in! You will be rewarded by the people you meet and the lessons you learn.
If I were to start my own Campus Y program, I would be interested in setting up something akin to the "Human Library" idea. It's a system where you can "check out" someone different than you for one-on-one conversations. These interactions let people from different backgrounds learn from one another, understand each other's perspectives, and ultimately gain a greater understanding of how we can build toward a brighter future together.
