Story

Thank you for visiting our JustGiving page. Your support means the world to us.

On New Year's Day, we will be taking the plunge at Barry Island to raise funds for oneof Ategi's supported living projects - we will be jumping into the freezing cold waters to raise funds for the residents at Ty Cornell.

Ty Cornel provides supported living for people who have expereinced homlessness. People like Shirley:

Shirley had an unsettled childhood. Her life became more and more chaotic, and eventually she ended up living in a busy half-way hostel. Her lifestyle was unhealthy, she suffered from anxiety and depression and became very frail. During that time she never felt safe. She lost touch with her family and started to feel invisible: she felt like nobody cared.

When Shirley came to Ty Cornel we arranged a full health check-up, and accompanied her to appointments. When we supported her to get her first pair of prescription glasses, Shirley discovered that she could see clearly. She started to take pride in herself and gain confidence. Shirley now has a buzzer in her room, so if she needs help, someone always comes really quickly.

Shirley’s support worker encouraged her to get in touch with her 3 daughters after years of no contact. At first Shirley was unsure, but now she says it has been a dream come true. Last year she was overjoyed to be at the wedding of her oldest daughter. All 3 daughters visit regularly, along with her 8 grandchildren. They are glad she’s at Ty Cornel and that the staff are taking such good care of her. Shirley is very proud of her room which is light, fresh and filled with framed pictures of her family. Shirley’s long-term goal is to be able to live independently - but for now she has a safe place to call home at Ty Cornel for as long as she needs it. “I feel cared for and that staff look out for me, there’s no judgement. I feel safe knowing the staff are there.” Shirley
