Story
Modern slavery affects millions worldwide, robbing individuals of their freedom and dignity. This year, The Salvation Army has made a powerful decision to dedicate funds from the London Marathon to their modern slavery cause. This is a team I have been a part of for almost 3 years.
We provide specialist support for all survivors of modern slavery in England and Wales. Our confidential Referral Helpline 0800 808 3733 is available 24/7.
Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking is in the UK, it is in London and it is on your doorstep hidden in plain sight.
Centuries after slavery was officially abolished, thousands of vulnerable people are still being exploited and sold into slave-like conditions across the UK. They can be forced to work in the sex trade or domestic settings, used as domestic slaves, exploited for labour or criminal activity, or have their organs removed to be sold.
Some people might be locked up or guarded; some are physically attacked or fear violence and their families may also be threatened. It is estimated that for every one person receiving support in the UK, seven more are trapped.
Although I'm not a runner and 26 miles feels daunting, I am passionate about bringing freedom, rebuilding lives, and seeking justice for survivors of modern slavery. My motivation comes from seeing first-hand the difference we can make for these survivors.
Over the last 12 years, The Salvation Army’s and our partners’ specialist support workers have helped nearly 22,000 survivors get financial, medical and legal advice, emotional support and help with housing; education and employment so they can move on with their lives.
