Most of you know that I have found a love for running. What started as 5K runs on the roads has grown into something a bit longer in the hills. This year, I am running the Wainwrights Coast to Coast, from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay—300 kilometres with a time limit of five days.
I had planned to do this just for fun (I know, I’m not normal!). However, recent events where marginalised groups were made to feel unwelcome by certain members of the running community have made me want to use this run to support two organisations that have helped me feel confident in tackling such a big challenge.
I will be fundraising for Black Trail Runners and Girls on Hills.
Black Trail Runners is a community and campaigning charity that works hard to increase representation in trail running. It does this thorugh it's charitable initiatives - social runs, trail taster days, kit loan scheme, event entry funding, run leader/coach qualifications and amplification and much more. I was fortunate to receive a race entry to the Spine Sprint, which lit my fire for taking on longer, self-supported races. I belong to a community that believes in me and supports me to do hard things. You can donate to BTR on this page.
Girls on Hills empowers women with the skills and confidence necessary to become self-reliant in the mountain environment .Girls on Hills is the UK's only guided trail, fell and skyrunning running company, designed specifically for women.
Through Girls on Hills’ navigation skills course and online webinars, I have gained confidence in my ability to take on such a big event. I am fortunate to be in a position where I can afford this training, but many women face barriers to accessing the trails and mountains. The Girls on Hills Access Fund is a not-for-profit initiative that covers the cost of courses for women who may otherwise struggle to participate.
