In the 35th anniversary year of BDMLR, volunteer marine mammal medics and supporters are fundraising to generate funds to help us rescue and rehabilitate seals and other marine mammals along our coast.

135 miles represents the journey from the East Coast, (from Berwick and around Edinburgh) to the seal sanctuary at Hessilhead on the west coast and to Portencross where the seals are released after months of dedicated care by their brilliant team of volunteers.

There are very few facilities to help wildlife and especially seals in Scotland and Hessilhead Wildlife Sanctuary is a charity who BDMLR work closely with that takes in all manner of wildlife but who are absolutely amazing at taking in and caring for poorly seals.

The act of rescuing and relaying injured, starving or exhausted seal pups to the shelter can be the job of one volunteer medic but more commonly is a team effort with several medics coming together to help at the beach or to relay the pup from beach to vets, to overnight emergency accommodation, with onward journey east to west and to its final destination. All of our medics are volunteers and sacrifice their own time and money to help our local wildlife.
