Story
I am running the London Marathon in support of the Pelican Cancer Foundation. Every day 50 people die of bowel cancer, and prostate cancer kills 10,000 men every year. Pelican supports research into the best way to diagnose and treat below the belt cancers, giving patients the best chance of a cure and a long-term quality of life.
My dad was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer in 2016. Over the last 8 years he has completed 26 rounds of Chemotherapy, 7 operations (bowel, liver and lung) and had 19 tumours removed! Dad has remained incredibly positive, resilient and defiant throughout his procedures and his focus has always been on his family, ensuring that we are all ok!
On a positive note he has just been given the ‘all clear’ after a recent scan and has a 6-month reprieve from being poked and prodded!
Dad’s incredibly positive attitude has been infectious and I believe he has inspired so many people around him to take stock and prioritise what is important in life. Incredibly, whilst going through this, Dad and Mum have raised over £5000 for cancer support charities! This inspired me to complete the Great North Run where I raised over £2000. I have run 3 more half marathons since which has inspired me to complete this challenge! 26.2 miles is a horrible distance!
There is no doubt that medical advances and the work of the Pelican Cancer Foundation have saved my Dad’s life but there is so much more to do. More funding is required for critical research and development with the ultimate goal to cure this indiscriminate disease.
I would really appreciate any donations to support the Pelican Cancer Foundation in their incredible work.
Thank you very much,
Scott
