The song
During the summer of 2023 when Scotland’s chances of qualifying for EURO 24 were looking good, I had the dream of writing a song.
After qualification was guaranteed, I set out to make this a reality. I worked with my friend, Norman Lamont to create the first demo in his home recording studio in South Queensferry. My aspiration from the beginning has been to create a song that the Tartan Army can chant to cheer on Scotland in Germany.
When I was at Oktoberfest for my birthday last year in Princess Street, I heard the concept of the German oompah style music and thought "that's it, that's the sound I need".
After lots of research, I found the instruments to make that kind of sound. I also wanted to pay tribute to Andy Cameron’s 1978 song – and create something that’ll hopefully stand the test of time as an anthem song. It’s these vibes that have created the feel of how the song has been written and composed.
“We’re On Our Way (to Germany)” took on its own momentum and we found ourselves teaming up with Heartbeat Recording Studio where extra magic was sprinkled over the song.
Local performing and recording artist, Colin Chisholm stepped forward to record the vocals. Colin is no stranger to football anthems and has previously recorded ‘The Hearts Song’ (Hearts Hearts Glorious Hearts) and ‘Hibs Heros’ (Hibee Hibernian).
David Paton, another local professional musician from the band Pilot who has recorded chart toppers such as 'January' and 'Magic', contributed to the song providing his expertise on bass guitar.
Pipes and drums were added to the mix with the help of Cockenzie and Port Seton RBL and Preston Pans RBL. We found a great ITV Sport interview of Ally McCoist getting excited about Scotland qualifying.
I hope fans love chanting the song as much as we’ve loved creating it. We're all delighted and proud to have been involved in the creation of this song. It has been an absolute adventure, and a collaborative endeavour.
A huge thanks to everyone involved: my friend, Norman Lamont, Dave Valentine and Ed Logan at Heartbeat Studios, Professor Alan McNeill, Consultant Urologist and Trustee of Prostate Scotland, Colin Chisolm and David Paton, all the pipers and drummers, ITV Sport and Ally McCoist, and all my friends and hairdressing clients who’ve been listening to the song throughout its development.
An extra special thanks to my wife Lynne and children Archie, Harrison and Rosie for putting up with my dulcet tones around our home, and continually singing the same lyrics over and over again!
C’mon Scotland, “We’re On Our Way”, let’s get behind the boys!
