Story

I'm Sarah, a Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust devotee (and employee), navigating through my life with two young children who keep me on my toes.

So why am I embarking on the Durrell Founders Trek, you ask? I want a future where wildlife thrives, knowing that the future of endangered species depends on our actions today. Durrell has been at the forefront of wildlife conservation for over 60 years and its projects are making a tangible difference in preserving our planet's biodiversity.

Plus, who wouldn’t want to say they’ve trekked through forests of rhododendrons and magnolias to the foot of Kanchenjunga and seen firsthand the work that goes into saving the world’s smallest pig?

So, I’m swapping school runs for mountain trails, trading my desk for a campsite under the stars, and exchanging my daily routine for the chance to experience the incredible work we do.

The Challenge

Next March, I will embark on an extraordinary journey, participating in a unique two-phase expedition. The trek combines a spectacular Himalayan adventure (Phase 1) with a meaningful conservation project (Phase 2).

Phase 1: Himalayan Trek

Our adventure begins in the bustling city of Delhi, one of the great cities of the world. From there, we will fly to Bagdogra and transfer to the starting point of our trek, staying overnight in a heritage hotel in a charming hill station along the way.

We will trek to one of the best viewpoints in the Himalayas, Dzongri La (4200m), to witness the five summits of the holy mountain, Kanchenjunga. Along the way, we will camp under the stars and experience the amazing flora and fauna of the region.

Phase 2: Conservation Project

After our trek, we will board a train to Phase 2 of our expedition.

In Guwahati, we will visit the pygmy hog breeding centre and the release sites in Manas National Park. Here, we will have the unique opportunity to see this threatened and elusive species, as well as a diverse array of spectacular wildlife. We will gain exclusive insights into critical conservation work and meet the team dedicated to saving the world's smallest pig, once thought to be extinct.

Join Me in Making a Difference

Your support is vital to the success of Durrell’s mission. Every contribution, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to a world where wildlife can thrive. Together, we can create a future where my children, your children, and generations to come can experience the beauty and wonder of our natural world.

Thank you for your generosity and support. Let’s make this trek a monumental success for wildlife conservation!
