240 miles in June - Sarah's fundraiser for Tommy's, the baby charity

60 Miles in June for Tommy's · 25 April 2024 to 30 June 2024 ·
Hello I'm Sarah - Tommy's PR Manager (currently on maternity leave!). The little chap in the flatcap is Jack Orson.
I signed up to the Tommy's '60 miles in June' challenge when it was launched, but I'm on leave and have lots of time on my hands - and live somewhere with a beautiful coast walking route and views - so having thought about it a bit more... I'm committing to walking 60 miles a WEEK in June instead. And pushing a pram for most of it!
60 miles in a month will be a fantastic achievement for a lot of people. It's a great way to get out and get fit while raising funds for a great cause. But since Jack was 8 days old, I've been averaging 4 or 5 miles walking a day, sometimes a lot more, and really wanted to push myself with this challenge. Walking has been hugely beneficial to my mental and physical health over the past six months. Also, it's just about the only time I can get this little goblin to take a daytime nap :)
I'm a useless runner and couldn't ever manage jogging a marathon in one sesh! But can I walk 9 or 10 of them with Jack in 30 days? Hell yes.
Tommy's is an incredible charity to work for and so deserving of support. They're doing brilliant things which help many thousands of families before, during and after pregnancy.
Money raised and donated to Tommy's helps:
- Fund scientists around the country who are seeking to better understand miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth and find ways to prevent it and save babies' lives.
- Fund clinics which help families who have experienced the devastation of recurrent miscarriage or stillbirth.
- Run a team of brilliant midwives, who are on hand by phone and email to provide support, reassurance, advice and care for parents in need.
- Ensure that the Sands and Tommy's Joint Policy Unit can operate to highlight issues, educate and pressure Government into improving maternity care in the UK.

We'll be hitting the coastal path between Jaywick and Holland on Sea every day in June, with an average of 8 miles walking a day. Sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less. It'll usually be one long walk of around 3 hours, but sometimes two shorter ones. I'm aiming to do the Clacton Pier to Walton Pier route at least once too (8 miles) followed by an ice cream and bus back. I'll be out in all weathers, but might leave Jack at home with his dad if it's torrential or very very hot.
In the evenings I'll also be topping up my 240 mile target with short jogs and crosstrainer sessions at Clacton GymFit with an aim of completing, in total, 262 miles or exactly 10 marathons. Just because it's a satisfying round number, and I work in PR and thought it might increase my chance of getting in the Clacton Gazette...
Thank you for reading. All donations, big or small, are hugely welcome.
