A new chapter, a new challenge: The London Marathon 2026 for Leukaemia UK
In May 2022, my life changed forever with a diagnosis of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL). A scary thing to hear, but thankfully I was reassured that even though this type of leukaemia is currently not curable, research has led to excellent treatments bring available. As a chronic rather than acute form of Leukaemia I was initially just observed by my consultant (and leading CLL Researcher) Dr Tal Munir. Unfortunately, it soon became apparent that the cancer was progressing, and I needed to begin treatment in September 2024. It has not been the easiest of years and I am grateful for all the support, particularly from Alan but also my family and many friends as well as the team at Nova Healthcare, St James Hospital in Leeds, through my 48 weeks of treatment. I now feel great and am hopeful of a long remission. I am eternally grateful for the research that made this possible. But my journey isn't over—it's only just beginning, and I need your help.
I am lucky. The research funded by charities like Leukaemia UK meant that a viable treatment plan existed for me. Yet, my situation is a stark reminder that many are not so fortunate. In the UK, only half of leukaemia patients survive for more than five years after their diagnosis. Leukaemia UK is committed to changing this devastating statistic, and so am I.
That's why my husband, Alan, and I are taking on the London Marathon on April 26, 2026. This is a formidable challenge, especially for us "non-youngsters," but every step we take will be fueled by our determination to make a difference. We are running to ensure that others facing this diagnosis have the same chance for a full life that I have been given.
Your donation has a direct impact. The revolutionary treatments I received wouldn't have been possible without research. By supporting us, you are not just funding an organisation; you are accelerating breakthroughs and providing life-changing care. You are becoming a critical part of the story, writing a hopeful chapter for the next person who hears the word "leukaemia."
We will be running for Leukaemia UK to help them continue their amazing work in funding vital research. Their mission is to stop leukaemia from devastating lives, and with your help, we can make that a reality.
Thank you for your generosity and support.
Sandra & Alan
