Founder's Trek

Founder's Trek · 22 March 2025 to 22 April 2025 · Start fundraising for this event
2025 will be a special year here at Durrell, as it would have been our founder, Gerald Durrells 100 birthday. Throughout the year we will be celebrating and fundraising for the incredible and deeply necessary work carried out by the trust, globally. In March 2025 myself and a group of members will be trekking from Gerald’s birth place, western Bengal to the Bhutan boarders at the foothill of the Himalayas. Whilst doing so we wish to raise as many funds for Durrell and raise awareness for one of our Indian projects. The Pygmy hog.
Once thought to be extinct, the world's smallest pig is also one of the most threatened mammals on Earth.
Found only in the tall grasslands of Assam in India, the pygmy hog was rediscovered in 1971 when a group was found sheltering from a grassland fire in a neighbouring tea plantation.
Since then, Durrell been working in Assam to save pygmy hogs from extinction through captive breeding and release programmes and grassland restoration and management.
