We support African Caribbean elders to stay active, independent and loving life

Story

My name is Samantha Shakes, aged 53 years, born in Hackney and a Hackney resident. I have Crohn’s disease which is a chronic disease, where the stomach becomes inflamed. I experience fatigue (tiredness that doesn’t improve with rest), rectal bleeding, loss of appetite, and depression.

I underwent surgery 27 years ago that involved the removal of my colon and appendix, leaving me with a stoma and the need to use an ileostomy bag. During this time, I developed 4 other autoimmune conditions, causing swelling and pain in joints, lack of concentration, weight loss and dizziness. Then I was hospitalised for sepsis 6 months ago, needed wheelchair assistance and was dependent on others (or a stick) to help with my walking.

Bad news – I hear you say? But, not so! I swiftly realised after surgery that it was possible to live a life of contentment. ‘Health challenges needn’t be a hindrance!’

I began focusing on the benefits of my experience. I felt like I had a second chance at doing life – with enjoyment and better. I travelled to Cuba, Kenya, Ghana and India for durations ranging from 1 month to half a year.

I adopted healthier eating that improved my health. I became a chronic disease Self-management tutor, helping 100’s of people with long-term conditions to improve their health. I lectured in universities, sharing my patient experience with student medical doctors and nurses. Keen to continue helping, I published a book titled ‘Then Life Took Control’ that received an award from the Nursing Standard Journal – didn’t expect that!

So, why do I want to run 5K? To improve my overall health, and to demonstrate with my 4 autoimmune conditions, the amazing potential of our Minds, Bodies and Spirits. And I would like to respect this energy by completing the run in 30 minutes (the average time is 42 minutes).

‘Are you mad? You’re 53, walking takes double time, you’ve got a limp and 4 conditions!’ I heard my other ‘Self’ ask. ‘Yes, I am sometimes mad! I trust the Universe, and I know 30 minutes is possible…' I reply.

And my Personal Trainer, Richard Lukombo, told me - ‘You’ve got in you, more than you know. All you’ve got to do is keep on running and keep on breathing!’

I want to fundraise for Hackney Caribbean Elders Organisation (HCEO) because….... I consider Elders as gems. Often sources of wisdom, invaluable experience, and fascinating stories. HCEO provides an amazing array of services to support elders from the local community in its warm and welcoming Centre in Hackney.

I want to support HCEO so it can continue, helping our gems enjoy life in their golden years. Encouraging smiles, laughter… And sharing love. Please join me!

About the charity

HCEO is a small, vibrant charity based in Stoke Newington providing support to older people from the local community from our warm, welcoming day centre. We are fully inclusive, open to anyone over the age of 55, but the majority of our members are 70+ and from the African Caribbean community. Our lunch club operates 4 days a week, Monday to Thursday, with one of those days specifically for older people who have mild to medium onset dementia. The club provides an opportunity for members to meet up with others in a friendly, accessible environment and receive a hot, nutritious 2 course lunch cooked freshly each day on the premises. While at the Centre, members take part in exercise and dance classes, arts and crafts workshops, cultural activities, gardening, film afternoons, chats on healthy living and much more. In addition, we offer help and support via our Advocacy service for issues such as securing benefits, getting foodbank deliveries, help with utility bills, arranging transport applications, etc. We also organise trips to the seaside, theatre, museums and take our members away on holidays, along with their family & friends, for much needed breaks.
