Story
On 27th April 2025 I'm running the London Marathon in aid of Hospice UK.
In 2016, my Granny was in the final stages of her battle with cancer and was placed in a hospice to receive all the necessary care and on hand support that she needed. I visited her a few times and it brought much comfort to see all the help she was getting and how comfortable she had seemed there. She was a wonderful woman inside and out and it means a lot to me to know that she could find peace, comfort and dignity in her final moments of life - something which I attribute to the efforts of all those that cared for her at St Francis Hospice. I’ll be running the marathon for Granny and also for Grandpa, who peacefully passed away in October 2024.
Training for a marathon isn't easy! I'm doing it because I want to fight for hospice care for all who need it. It’s not always possible, especially in the current economic climate, for someone to give up working or reduce their hours in the name of providing palliative care to a friend or relative who is suffering. Hospices around the UK provide 24/7 care for those who need it as well as providing support to family members and friends. There is a whole range of resources that they offer to ease the struggle in the final stages and aid all those who are involved.
Hospice care eases the pain of death and dying, letting people focus on living, right until the end. Too many miss out on this essential care. Hospice UK fights for hospice care for all who need it, now and forever.
As the national champion for hospices, Hospice UK supports over 200 hospices across the UK, helping them deliver the best, most personalised care to 300,000 people each year. But hospices are underfunded and under immense pressure.
