Sam's fundraiser for Mind

Brighton Marathon 2025 · 6 April 2025 ·
I spend a lot of time speaking with people in the civil engineering sector understanding their projects as well as own challenges with a work-life balance. The construction industry can offer a rewarding and diverse career path however it can demand long hours, extensive travel, time spent away from home, and high-pressure environments leading to mental health challenges. For many employees, discussing these issues or seeking support has traditionally been difficult.
Unfortunately, it’s all too common to see posts on LinkedIn or hear of individuals deeply impacted by mental health challenges.
This April, I’ll be running the Brighton Marathon to raise funds for Mind, a charity dedicated to providing vital mental health resources and support, for those in the construction sector. Every bit of support is greatly appreciated.
Fortunately, this is beginning to change. An increasing number of companies are prioritising their employees' mental health. With more resources, training, and support available, promoting mental health and well-being is becoming a central focus in the industry with the support of many charities.
Mental health in construction:
Stigma and Silence: Despite the high prevalence of mental health issues, stigma remains a significant barrier in construction. Many workers fear being seen as weak or incapable, preventing them from seeking help.
Suicide Rates: Alarmingly, suicide rates among construction workers are much higher than the national average. Contributing factors include job insecurity, financial pressures, and workplace stress.
Work-Related Stress: The demanding nature of construction, characterised by tight deadlines, long hours, and physically strenuous tasks, significantly increases stress levels among workers.
Limited Support: Mental health resources in the construction sector are often insufficient. Many workers encounter obstacles to accessing confidential, stigma-free support, leaving their challenges unaddressed.
