Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!

In March 2024 I will be challenging myself to a 3 day trek with a small team in Iceland in aid of Prospect Hospice, which will include hiking along the fault line that divides America and Europe in the National Park of Thingvellir. I am not a big walker, so walking up to 15k a day with kit and rucksack will prove physically and mentally challenging - let's hope my knees will cope!

My fundraising target for the trek is £2990. I will personally donate the costs for the trip itself over the next year. This means that every penny you generously contribute goes directly towards supporting the Prospect Hospice and its life-changing work.

As many of you will know, my Mum, Jenny Barter died in 2020 after a long and difficult few years following a diagnosis of bowel cancer. This followed a previous diagnosis of ovarian cancer that she recovered from 25 years earlier. Anyone who knew Jenny couldn't fail to notice her resilience and determination to live life to the full, regardless of her condition and the difficulties that she faced.

In the later stage of her illness when housebound and confined to a wheelchair, Mum found great comfort in her monthly visits to the Prospect Hospice for respite. She would be collected from home to spend time in the company of others, have lunch, chat and do craft activities or have a much-welcomed manicure. Jenny always lived her life in a very creative way, so these moments were wonderful to lift her mood and sense of well-being. Her dignity and creativity were restored for those few hours, and she would always come home brighter than when she left. The Prospect nurses and volunteers were always so kind and caring during her visits.

I will also be holding in memory my father Colin, mother-in-law Ann and father-in-law Kevin – all four parents died within a short space during the Covid years – a difficult time for us as a family. Finding palliative care and support for them all proved challenging and was often hugely stressful and emotional.

Prospect Hospice provides essential care to those at the end of their lives along with much needed support to families at such a difficult time. The amazing nurses, therapists, teams and volunteers give outstanding compassion and care to all who receive it. After a very difficult few years, Prospect Hospice needs more money and support to keep delivering this care to everyone who needs it – so any contribution, no matter how small, can make a difference.

THANK YOU SO MUCH to anyone who donates to support me – I promise to do all I can to raise as much as possible for this hugely important charity!
