Story
Team Domenica is the Brighton & Hove based charity that delivers communication and work skills training to young adults with learning disabilities who want to be employed, and delivers support at work placements to increase the candidates’ chance of achieving paid employment. Team Domenica offers its candidates personalised support to achieve their potential, and provides additional specific support for the prospective employer to understand how to include and work with the learning disabled young adult.
Only 5.1% of people with learning disabilities are in work in England. 84% of Team Domenica candidates have progressed into employment through their programmes.
Issie is a Team Domenica candidate. She says,
“Team Domenica is great. You learn while you work in a team so you feel more confident and happy, and get more skills. A lot of my friends from Team Domenica now have paid jobs and they feel really good earning their own money, keeping busy and meeting more people. This is what I’m working towards.
I am swimming to support Team Domenica because it helps young disabled people to get employed, to stay in work and to have active lives.”
Issie was born with complex learning and physical disabilities. Not long ago, she was a non-swimmer but with very special support, she has learned to swim and enjoy breast stroke, her only stroke at the moment. “Thanks to all the training and support I have had, I aim to swim at least 800m to raise money for Team Domenica.”
Thank you for supporting Issie through your donation to Team Domenica which will help the charity to train and support more young adults with learning disabilities to take part independently in the community and gain paid employment.
