Sammy & Ciarán's fundraiser for Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation

Snowdon at Night · 23 June 2024 ·
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
In the early hours of June 23rd, Ciarán and I will begin our ascent up Mount Snowdon for what's sure to be a very moving yet memorable climb to the summit, in time for sunrise.
As many of you know, four years ago I lost my beautiful mum, following her very short and courageous battle with Lung Cancer. Her diagnosis came as a huge shock to us all, especially considering she lived a very active, healthy, lifestyle, and had never smoked.
Mum loved spending time outdoors. Growing up, we would spend hours walking the dogs multiple times a day, and this was something she continued to do for as long as she was able to. We shared a love of looking up at the stars on a clear night, often reminiscing about those who had passed, and what they might be doing 'up there'. It is because of this that the Snowdon at Night challenge felt especially pertinent to me, and Ciarán who, thankfully knew mum albeit for a short time before she had to leave us.
Lung Cancer is the UK's biggest cancer killer, with more than 36,000 people dying from the disease every year, from the 48,500 diagnosed. Statistically, it kills more people than breast, prostate and pancreatic cancer combined, and more women than breast and ovarian cancer combined, yet it's not widely known, or spoken about. Following mum's diagnosis, we had just three months together, despite trying everything we could to prolong the time we had left. We need to change these facts; we need to work together to fund research and improve the treatment for all of those diagnosed with the disease and for all of the family and friends affected around it.
Mount Snowdon is Wales' highest peak at 1,085 metres. The route follows the Llanberis Path, covering 9 miles, and is estimated to take approximately 9 hours. We set off at 00:45, expecting to reach the summit at 04:30 in time for sunrise at 04:49, which will be really special- hopefully we get a nice clear sky for it. We are blessed to be joined by our lovely friends, Helen and Gez, who agreed to come on this adventure with us and are fundraising on a separate page , in memory of Gez's parents who both lost their lives to Lung Cancer. It will be amazing to complete the climb together, and we've no doubt there will be a few laughs (and probably a few tears) along the way.
Life is precious, whilst it can sometimes get hectic, it's important for us all to just sit back and be grateful for our health and having the freedom to live and breathe easily.
Any amount you can spare to donate, however small, would be greatly appreciated.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you
Sammy & Ciarán
