Last week I learned of yet another old friend who decided to end their life. Today I attended their funeral.
I know this person felt they didn't have another option but I desperately wish we could have proven they did.
As I'm sure many of you have, I've grown up around people who have struggled day in and day out with their mental health. So many of us look after our physical form but neglect our inner world through fear, a lack of support or finances, or even just pure confusion on where to start.
Recently I made the decision to see a therapist every week and, while the conversations can be very confronting, I'm committed to becoming the most at peace version of me. I'm currently raising money for SAMH in the hope that we can reach more people who are struggling, as I know going private for therapy just isn’t accessible for everyone.
We need to be louder about the importance of talking about our feelings, show that there's so many people who care and help each other to trust that things can get a whole lot better.
A message from SAMH:
'Right now there is a mental health crisis in Scotland and so it's time for our new strategy.
Too many promises and a pandemic later, people are still being left behind. Rejected referrals, indeterminate waiting times and inadequate support.
So here’s the deal. We won’t wait.
SAMH has been there for Scotland’s mental health for 100 years. We’ve delivered care and support to tens of thousands of people, we’ve spoken out, stood up, and most importantly, we have listened. We’re tried, tested and trusted, but now it’s time for more.
We are stepping up, so that SAMH can reach everyone who needs us.'
On June 15th, I'll be taking on Tough Mudder with some of my colleagues and members of their families: Lynsey McGregor, Julie Grant, Katie Laverty, Chris Henry, Anton Tkacz, Andrew Henry, Theresa Henry, Kieran Henry, Craig Holliday and Keziah McGregor.
This challenge isn't just about the 10+ mile course and 20 obstacles; it's about pushing boundaries, raising awareness, and supporting those in need. SAMH's impact is immeasurable, and our team is determined to do everything in our power to ensure they can continue their life-changing work.
With your support, we're eager to transform muddy obstacles into pathways of hope and healing. Every donation, no matter how small, will make a difference in the lives of those affected by mental health challenges.
Thank you,
Ruth xo
